The Divine and the profane church and community house
Description
The project explores the relationship between religious and profane space, between church and community house. It questions in which way these themes belong togheter and how they can be articulated. A church lies in a field. It consists of a large gable roof with spaces inside. The main space is asymmetrical, the roof merges with the floor on one side, on the other a wall divides it from smaller spaces that are open to the field. By the altar the wall ends, creating an opening where the field reaches into the space. A community house lies on a quiet street next to an old farm. It is an extension of the street, a cave dug into a sloping field. Retaining walls follow the terrain towards a posterior core hiding all service space. Towards the street a glass facade shows the activities within to passers by.
