Search & Rescue Helmet : A dedicated search and rescue helmet, designed for the Norwegian Air Ambulance service.
Description
Throughout the year, the workers of the Norwegian Air ambulance face difficult rescues and challenging environments. The shifting weather and environment found in Norway means that the crew have to operate through bad weather, steep mountains and cold waters. This implies that both the gear and crew will need to withstand extreme environments and situations throughout the whole year. In these scenarios, the crew are highly dependent on their equipment to work properly, and safety can`t be addressed high enough, with the helmet being one of their most important tools. Thomas N. Dahle, rescuer and idea initiator recognized the potential of a dedicated search and rescue helmet, that could greatly improve their current solution. Helmets can be found in a wide variety of markets, from bicycle helmets to climbing, rafting and skiing. Few of these commercial focused helmets can fulfill the demands that the air ambulance service in Norway requires. In my diploma I have focused on the user and their demands regarding functionality and integration. From several field studies, interviews and prototyping, I have made a prototype that resembles the first stage in the development of a new search and rescue helmet for the workers of the Norwegian Air Ambulance. In the end, I hope this project will inspire further development of a new search and rescue helmet, and hopefully, improve the advanced emergency rescue service in Norway.
