In a small village, the school is often associated with a gathering point. Daily activities, small events and big celebrations often take place in the same building, in the absence of alternatives. If the school disappears, much of the life in the village will be lost. In many ways the small school is a premise for living in the districts. This diploma investigates the potential of a small school program in district Norway. The architectural potential of a grendeskole lies in the flexibility of the teaching situation. The possibilities lie in the classroom and how to create a good teaching situation for the pupils, which also benefits the smalltown’s use after school. The teaching situation must be able to take care of both the large group, the small group and individual students. In a village school with few pupils, a general flexibility in the use of the classrooms and the organization of teaching rooms to be able to “share” the teacher, will be essential. The project focus on the building´s meaning for and interaction with the local community. The school has the potential to do more than just to be an institution. The school can also contribute to revitalizing a centre. By designing for multi-use, the building will increase its attractiveness and stand more firmly in society.en_US
