Beskrivelse
Writing With the Machine is an explorative design diploma investigating machine learning as a design material. As a design experiment, I trained a machine learning model on an archive of personal letters written by my great grandfather. Using this experiment as a starting point, working hands on with both the data material and the software, I reflect upon different aspects of machine learning.
The main ambition of the project is to investigate - how might we use design to explore and communicate aspects of machine learning? How can we approach highly technical and complex technologies like machine learning, through alternative perspectives and approaches?
The outcome of the experiment is a set of three books, alongside a website. The books showcase materials from different steps in the experiment - scans from the analogue letter archive, the process of digitizing and transcribing the archive, letters generated by the machine. The web-site collects observations from the experiment and functions as a digital resource with links to the works that have inspired the project. Together these artifacts make out a framework to dis-cuss and talk about machine learning.
